Stop Congress from Blocking Sea Turtle Protections

Louisiana Congressman Jeffrey Landry is trying to block new regulations that will protect sea turtles from drowning in shrimp nets!

The U.S. House of Representatives Congress passed this terrible amendment on a 281 - 201 vote. Of those 28 Republicans voted NO and 10 Democrats voted YES. Next step will be to defeat it in the Senate. Watch for updates!

Last year more than 3,500 sea turtles, mostly Kemp's ridleys, died during the shrimp season. It's time to close the deadly loophole and require Turtle Excluder Devices in all shrimp vessels, including skimmer trawls.

Please call or email  your Congressional Representative now and tell them to vote no on the Landry Amendments to the Appropriations Bill for the Departments of Commerce, Justice and Science. They will be voting today, May 9, or tomorrow, May 10, 2012. To read more, please click here. More here.

Additional Info and Details

All six species of sea turtles that occur in U.S. waters remain protected by the Endangered Species Act because none have achieved or even approach recovery goals.

Gulf shrimping is the leading killer of sea turtles in the U.S. and the leading killer of the critically endangered Kemp's ridley sea turtles.

Independent marine scientists from the Gulf Coast and across the nation jointly signed a letter with the Sea Turtle Restoration Project (STRP) urging Louisiana’s Governor Bobby Jindal to repeal the law that allows shrimp fishermen to drown sea turtles in Louisiana waters.
