Hawaii's "Honu" Green Sea Turtles Need You!

The Threatened Hawaiian Honu Faces Loss of Protections and a Return of Hunting!

Thank you to the more than 5,000 people who took action to support protections for the well loved Hawaii honu!

Another 125,000 people signed the Change.org petition that we submitted today!

Your support goes a long way to ensuring the protection of this natural treasure. Stay tuned for news and updates and how you can help the honu!

Speak up for the safety of the honu!  Take Action by October 1, 2012. See below.

Now that the green sea turtles have returned from the brink of extinction and are beginning to thrive in Hawaii’s waters, they face the loss of their protections under the U.S. Endangered Species Act.

Most Hawaiian residents and visitors revere the gentle green turtle known as the “honu.” But others with entrenched interests in industrial fisheries and exploitation of the oceans want to remove safeguards that keep them from harm and even hunt these gentle ocean dwellers  –  a practice that nearly wiped them out 30 years ago. Photo of honu copyright Anita Wintner.

Write to National Marine Fisheries Service using the email form letter below. Please add your thoughts about what the honu means to you for maximum impact!

If you can do more, please send the letter directly to the government comment website so it will be counted as one unique letter, instead of one of many "form letters." Cut and paste the letter below as a template, then add your experiences. Be sure to write the regulation number on your letter: NOAA–NMFS–2012–0154 and send us a copy at info@seaturtles.org

Note to International supporters! Please be sure to use the Non-US State, Country and Postal Code fields!
